The lake is located at a distance of 28 kms from Ooty in the Nilgiris. It was formed naturally in the year 1823 due to a massive landslide and therefore is named as Avalanche lake. Small waterfalls falling down from the encircling mountains creates a picture perfect ambience. The surrounding forests are so dense that even sunlight cannot penetrate through them.
